CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME
In its literal sense charity is love of one’s fellow men; kindness; natural affection.
Samuel was a great Prophet but one can assume he did not enforce discipline in his home. His sons were not level headed (1 Samuel 8:3). Likewise, Eli was the High Priest of Shiloh, he was a believer and a priest and a judge over Israel. But Eli's sons were scoundrels; they had no regard for the LORD (1Samuel 2:12). Speaking of Eli, God said, “I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons made themselves contemptible, and he failed to restrain them” (1 Samuel 3:13).
Charity begins at home, conversion of souls does not begin with the congregation but it begins at your home. Who do you try to impress when you donate millions to build a hospital but your blood brother cannot pay his school fees. A person's first responsibility is for the needs of their own family and friends.
Titus 1:6 states an Elder in a Church must be the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination.
A good man is not examined by how he treats outsiders but how he treats those around him. Do not preach what you do not practice.
Shalom!
